Hunting Areas and Camps

Hunting Areas and Hunting Camps

The primary areas in South Africa where we conduct hunting safaris are: the Free State, Kalahari, Semi Dessert Karo and Semi Bushveld. In each of these safari areas we have various hunting concessions. The specific concession we will utilize will depend on the time of year as well as the number of trophies, which we have taken in a concession area. A description of each of the safari areas is provided below as well as some photos of typical safari hunting camps in the area. The trophy species, which are available in the area, are also listed.

Free State

Area Description

The Free State is a rural province of wide horizons and blue skies, with farmland, mountains and widely dispersed towns. The land of the windpomp and krummelpap is peaceful, with a high quality of life, good infrastructure and a low crime rate. The province covers an area of 129,464 km and has a population of 2,8 million – 6,4% of the national population. Although the Free State is the third largest province in South Africa, it has the second smallest population and the second lowest population density. The biggest part of the Free State is an undulating plain at between 1000m and 1500m above sea level. However, the eastern and southern region, which borders Lesotho, is hilly to mountainous with scattered flat top hills or ‘kopjes’.

The Free State is hot in the summer, with rain falls between 600mm and 750mm in the east to less than 300mm in the west. It can be very cold in the winter, with heavy frost over most of the province. Snow is often recorded on the eastern mountains. Average winter temperature : 7.7’C Average Summer Temperature : 23’C

The Free State  boasts an extensive system of parks and reserves, including a national park (Golden Gate) and more than 80 provincial, municipal and privately owned nature parks, nature reserves, game reserves and game farms. A vast amount of wildlife species can be found and you are sure to find what you are looking for whether on safari hunting, photo or just traveling.

Trophy Species Available in the Free State
Black Wildebeest, Blesbuck, Eland, Gemsbuck, Grey Duiker, Grey Rhebuck, Mountain Reedbuck, Red Hartebeest, Springbuck, Steenbuck, Zebra (Burchells)

Semi-Bushveld

This area is a land of dramatic contrasts characterizes by hot savannah plains and mist-clad mountains: age old indigenous forests and cycads alongside later day plantations; ancient mountain fortresses which have stood guard over these plains. It's moreover a land of legend and romance that will intrigue present-day visitors with tales of ancient tribes and fearless pioneers who braved the unknown in days of old. The province is the home of the enigmatic rain queen who, as the legends of her people proclaim, has the mystical power to make rain.

The Limpopo bushveld has long been considered one of South Africa's finest hunting areas with an abundance of different safari species which can be hunted in challenging terrain. The terrain varies from savannah grassland to thick reverie brush and hilly outcrops which are favoured by species like the Kudu.

The area is in a summer rainfall region with most rain occurring from October to March. Rainfall is normally in the form of thunder showers in the late afternoon which rarely last more than two hours.

Kalahari

The Kalahari is mostly a desert with large red sand dunes dominating the landscape. In good years the dunes will have grass and short shrubs on them, but in dry years you can see the dunes and “streets” clearly from miles away.

The sunsets on the Kalahari are spectacular. The winter evenings can be cold with temperatures reaching to -3 Celcius. During the day the temperatures can rise to +20 Celcius.

The population is sparse and the people tend to be friendly. The wildlife population is plentiful and results in a hunting experience of a lifetime.

Karoo

The Karoo is characterized as semi-desert area with short bush type vegetation. The temperature is basically the same as the Kalahari. The Karoo is becoming one of the most popular hunting areas in South Africa among the local hunters.
